How to Prepare for a South African Safari

While on safari, it’s essential to respect the wildlife and environment

Safari Etiquette

  • Keep Noise to a Minimum: Animals are sensitive to sound; whispering is encouraged to avoid startling them.

  • Stay Inside the Vehicle: For your safety and that of the animals, always remain inside the vehicle unless your guide instructs otherwise.

Wildlife Interactions

  • Animal Behavior: Each safari offers a unique opportunity to witness animal interactions and behaviors, from a lion pride lounging under a tree to elephants splashing in a watering hole.

  • Photographic Moments: Bring a good camera and binoculars; you'll want to capture the breathtaking scenery and incredible wildlife encounters.

Climate and Weather

  • Mild Conditions: Daytime temperatures during the dry season (May to September) are generally warm, while nights can be cool—perfect for cozy evenings by the fire.

  • Packing Essentials: Bring layers, sun protection, and comfortable footwear for both game drives and bush walks.

Best Time to Go on Safari

Dry Season (May to September)

  • Wildlife Viewing: This is the prime time for spotting wildlife as animals gather around limited water sources, making them easier to see.

  • Optimal Weather: Enjoy clear skies and pleasant temperatures, perfect for outdoor activities.

Green Season (October to April)

  • Lush Landscapes: The bush comes alive with vibrant greenery, and many animals give birth, making it a picturesque time for photographers.

  • Bird Watching: Migratory birds return, providing an excellent opportunity for bird enthusiasts.
