How to Get a Visa for Afghanistan as a Tourist
Traveling to Afghanistan requires obtaining a visa in advance. Here’s a step-by-step guide to navigating the visa application process:
Decide where you will apply
Personally, I applied from the Embassy in Islamabad, but you can also go to Dubai
Gather Required Documents: You will need:
A completed visa application form.
A valid passport with at least six months remaining.
Passport-sized photographs.
A letter of invitation from an Afghan resident or organization (often needed for tourist visas).
Proof of travel itinerary, including flight details.
Submit Your Application: Fly to the Afghan embassy or consulate that you chose. Wear a headscarf if you are a woman. You will not be able to bring in your phone, contact Saddam if you plan to apply in Islamabad: +92 317 5031284
Pay the Visa Fee: Fees vary, so check the current rates with the embassy or consulate. I spent around $200
Processing Time: They expedited my visa because I was flying out the same day. Ask Saddam about processing, they may charge you an extra fee.
Important Note: Due to the changing situation in Afghanistan, it is advisable to check with someone at the embassy whenever you can to ensure this information is current.

As I traveled through the country, I observed both the beauty and the challenges faced by its people.
Security and Travel
While the security situation has improved compared to the tumultuous years of conflict, there are still notable restrictions. Checkpoints are a common sight, serving as reminders of the ongoing oppression. Music is banned, and there’s a palpable sense of caution in the air. However, traveling feels relatively safe for tourists, but it is never without risk.
The Reality for Women
The Taliban’s return has drastically altered women’s rights in Afghanistan. While some women can still attend school in urban areas, secondary education is largely prohibited, and many women face severe restrictions on their movements. The stark contrast between the past and present leaves a heavy heart for those who witnessed Afghanistan's brief period of progress.
Economic Collapse
The economy is in dire straits, with public services collapsing and many women losing their jobs. The opium trade has become one of the few lucrative sources of income, further complicating the situation. The despair among the population is palpable, with many expressing a longing for the stability that the American presence once provided.
Cultural Richness Amidst Challenges
Despite the ongoing difficulties, Afghanistan is a country rich in culture and natural beauty. During my travels, I was captivated by the stunning landscapes and historical sites. Here are some highlights:
Bamiyan Valley: Once home to the monumental Buddhas, now destroyed, this valley offers breathtaking views and a glimpse into Afghanistan’s pre-Islamic past.
Kabul: The capital city is bustling with life, where the blend of tradition and modernity can be witnessed in its markets and cafés.
Cuisine: Afghan food is a delightful experience. I particularly enjoyed dishes like Aushak (leek-filled dumplings) and Kebabs, which reflect the country’s culinary diversity.
Afghanistan: the Journey Worth Taking
Traveling to Afghanistan is not without its challenges and risks, but for those willing to engage with its complex realities, it offers a unique experience unlike any other. While the country faces significant obstacles, the resilience and warmth of its people shine through, despite a sad muted feeling covering the faces of everyone I spoke to.
